Whether you’re handling the installation yourself or hiring a company to help, we’ve put together some tips to help you accentuate your existing landscaping with holiday lighting and décor.

Start with a Plan

Everyone has a different style when it comes to holiday décor. Some people prefer a minimalist approach with white lights and greenery, while some like to go all-out with a full display. Decide what is authentic to your style and go from there. If you’re using lighting from previous years, plug them in to ensure they work before going through the process of hanging them. If you’re purchasing new lighting, be mindful of the type of lights you are purchasing. We highly recommend using weather resistant electrical strips and lighting. Make sure you purchase enough electrical strips, so you don’t overload your them leading to fire hazards and electrical issues. Solar lighting is another great option when purchasing outdoor décor.

Think in 3s

When planning out your décor, think of you yard in terms of three levels. Level 1 is the pathway and ground lighting. Level 2 are your shrubs, trees, and smaller bushes. Level 3 is the lighting on your home and any larger trees. Now let’s talk about how to decorate these levels according to your existing landscaping.

Let’s Decorate!

Walkways

Walkway lighting is something many homes have installed for year-round use. Depending on the walkway lighting you have installed, you can change the colors to match the festive theme of your home. This will help guests arrive at your front door safely this holiday season, especially as winter weather hits. If you don’t have walkway lighting, you can easily find solar, or battery powered options at your local hardware or home store.

Trees and Bushes

Existing trees and bushes are perfect focal points for holiday lighting. You can use spotlights and ornaments to create an outdoor Christmas tree, or simply use string lights to give a different look. If you’re planning to add string lights, we recommend using netted lighting. This type of lighting is designed for trees and bushes and will keep the lights from getting tangled and damaging your foliage.

Home Exterior

A good rule of thumb is to accentuate your home’s architecture. Use elements like bay windows, front steps, and window ledges to create a breathtaking holiday display. If you have natural greenery in your landscape, incorporate some of those greens in your décor to tie everything together. Decorating your home’s exterior can help greet your guests with a warm welcome.

Remember, if you are adding lights to your roof or higher areas of your home, please be sure to do so safely. If you struggle every year to install your lights you can hire a professional or invest in permanent outdoor lighting. With so many solutions out there, don’t suffer this holiday season.

If you’re considering adding permanent lighting to your home’s exterior, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’ve helped many families install the right lighting for their needs, and we’re eager to help you explore the best options to meet yours.

Wishing you a happy and safe holiday season!

Sources:

https://bestprolighting.com/blog/news/outdoor-holiday-lighting-ideas?srsltid=AfmBOor7MntPykmadXTeSjwUggy_dc1PFpOBbcx0zpQWmIk4aeIxUrzF

https://bestprolighting.com/blog/news/staying-safe-with-your-holiday-landscape-lighting

https://www.timberlinelandscaping.com/how-to-incorporate-holiday-lighting-into-your-landscaping

https://www.lowes.com/n/ideas-inspiration/outdoor-holiday-lighting-ideas

https://www.groundsguys.com/gettysburg/about/blog/2022/november/outdoor-holiday-lighting-ideas-perfect-for-your-

The post Holiday Lighting and Decoration Ideas to Accentuate Your Landscaping appeared first on Inch & Co. While these elements are low maintenance and built to withstand all weather, it is still important to perform regular maintenance to ensure these features stay in top-shape for the long run. So, what should you do to keep your hardscape looking good as new? Here are a few simple maintenance tips for the fall months that can ensure your outdoors are prepared for the winter.

Clean Your Hardscaping:

Routinely cleaning your hardscaping can keep your outside area in the best shape possible. Start by sweeping debris off the hardscaped areas. Then follow up by washing these areas using soap and water. We recommend cleaning up spills or stains as soon as they happen to keep regular upkeep to a minimum. If you’re experiencing stains or discoloration, we recommend power washing. If you don’t have experience with power washing, we recommend hiring a professional to complete this job. It’s very important that you don’t damage your hardscaping trying to do it yourself. Give us a call, we can help!

Weed Prevention & Removal:

It is completely normal for weeds to grow through the crack in your walkways, patios, and other areas throughout your yard. Keeping up with weed removal will help keep these features clean and prevent damage. Simply remove the weeds from the cracks and spray herbicide if needed to prevent further growth.

Regular Inspections:

Don’t forget about your home’s exterior. Many of your home’s issues, including water and structural damage, start outside of the home. This is why it’s so important to check your hardscaping for water accumulation, cracks in retaining walls, and other signs of damage. If something looks off, call us right away. We will come out, find the issue, and address it immediately. This will help you keep your home and family safe from any future issues.

Resealing Your Hardscaping:

The wear and tear from harsh Pennsylvania weather can deteriorate your pavers over time. Applying sealant can help prevent damage and keep them in top-shape. If you recently had your hardscaping installed, you can skip this step for now as your pavers will be sealed upon the completion of your project. We recommend sealing your pavers every 3 – 5 years to avoid over sealing. This process is best for warmer temperatures, so be sure to do this before getting too far into the fall season.

Another important factor to keep in mind while heading into the winter months is which snow and ice treatment you’re using on your hardscaping. We recommend using a snow blower or plastic shovels that won’t scratch or damage your hardscaping. Make sure to remove the snow appropriately and only use deicing products when there is ice to be removed. Try to avoid over treating your hardscaped areas.

Have questions or notice some issues with your hardscaping?

Essential Fall Landscaping Maintenance Tips:Prepare Your Lawn and Garden for Winter in Pennsylvania

Landscaping maintenance pertains to areas such as your lawn, plants, soil, and mulch. Fall is a great time to focus on your landscaping and ensure you’re planning for spring while preparing for the winter. Here are a few tips to help you transition your landscaping for the colder Pennsylvania months.

Leaf Clean Up & Management

There are a few different ways to deal with falling leaves. You can rake them, collect them, and set them out for pick up, or you can utilize them to fertilize your plants. To use your leaves as fertilizer, start by raking them into a wide layer a few inches thick. Then mow over the pile of leaves a few times to break them down into smaller pieces. Collect the shredded leaves and spread them around your plants about 2 – 4 inches deep. Leave a few inches of space clear at the base of the plants to avoid causing damage.

Seed and Fertilize Your Lawn

Experiencing dead grass from the hot Pennsylvania summer we just experienced? Fall is the best time to repair your lawn from any damage caused in the summer months. Start by aerating your lawn to help the soil breathe. This will create stronger roots, increasing growth in the warmer months. If you’re experiencing areas of dead grass, seed these areas and fertilize regularly to replace dead grass. Not sure where to start? We put together a helpful guide to assist you with aerating and seeding your lawn here.

Prune Trees and Shrubs

Prevent damage to your trees and shrubs in the winter months by pruning and trimming in the fall. Remove dead limbs and overgrown branches to prevent damage from fallen limbs in the winter months. As snow and ice collect, limbs become heavier causing them to break, fall, and cause unexpected damage. If you need help with larger trees, our tree service division is here to help. Visit our services tab for more information.

Weed and Plant

Fall is a great time to plant. With cooler soil temperatures and additional rainfall, plants thrive in Pennsylvania fall weather. We recommend planting perennials this time of year to encourage root growth, allowing them to return in the spring season stronger than ever. It is also important to manage weeds in the fall. Weeds work harder in the fall to store important nutrients that can leave them emerging stronger in the spring. Manage Water Runoff

Retaining walls can help direct water flow, especially when it comes to heavy rain fall like we’re experiencing this fall in South Central Pennsylvania. If you find your home taking on water when it storms, adding a retaining wall can help block the water from entering by redirecting the flow.

2. Prevent Soil Erosion

When heavy rain and snow occur in Pennsylvania, the soil is easily loosened leading to soil erosion. Soil erosion can be messy and cause damage to your landscaping and your home. Retaining walls can help prevent this issue. Contact one of our talented landscaping designers to find the perfect design to meet your specific yard.

3. Provide Structural Support

This benefit goes hand in hand with preventing soil erosion. If your is located on a slant or hilly area, retaining walls can help create a solid foundation for your home. These walls keep the soil sturdy, preventing damage from occurring to your home.

4. Helps Optimize Your Space & Create Added Functionality

With so many different styles of retaining walls to choose from, there’s room to get creative. We’ve designed many different retaining walls throughout the years that have doubled as functional outdoor spaces. Create additional outdoor seating, flower beds, add built-in lighting and so much more! Make sure you explore your options ahead to ensure you’re optimizing your space.

5. Add Property Value & Increase Curb Appeal

If you have a need for a retaining wall in your front yard, this is an easy way to boost your curb appeal. Function meets aesthetic when you utilize these walls to show off your landscaping. Regardless of where you end up installing your retaining wall, you are still improving your property which directly increases the value of your home. Retaining walls are a long term investment that will benefit your home for years to come.

Ready to get started? The fall is the perfect time to incorporate outdoor lighting into your outdoor space or home’s exterior. Outdoor lighting serves many different purposes. Keep reading to find out the benefits of installing outdoor lighting this fall.

Extend Your Outdoor Space

Extend the life of your outdoor space by adding lighting. Just because the sun sets earlier doesn’t mean you have to cut your outdoor entertainment short. Installing outdoor lighting can provide a well-lit area to entertain guests or simply relax and enjoy the cool fall evenings in the comfort of your yard.

Boost Curb Appeal

You spent valuable time and money ensuring your home looks beautiful, why not show it off? Outdoor lighting isn’t just for your backyard. Add lights around your front flower beds, walkways, and even in the windows to brighten up your home for everyone to see. Our team recently installed color changing lights that allows the homeowners to change them based on the upcoming holidays. Light it up red and green for Christmas or red, white, and blue in the summer months. The options are endless when you customize your outdoor lighting.

Safety & Security

One of the biggest benefits to outdoor lighting is safety. Adding light to the dark areas of your yard can prevent accidents and injury, especially if you’re living with children or older adults that have trouble getting around. Lighting the exterior of your home can also make it more difficult for burglars and crime. The more lighting you have, the less likely it is for your home to become a target.

Increase Home Value

Whenever you add a new element to your outdoor space, it immediately increases the value of your home. The more work you put into your home, the less the new owner will need to add. Make sure you’re investing in quality lighting that can withstand the test of time. A well-lit home stands out from the others and can help attract potential buyers.

Now that you’re considering adding outdoor lighting to your home, where should you start? We’ve compiled expert advice from our skilled landscaping designers and answers to our clients’ most frequently asked questions to provide you with the information you need to make an informed decision.

Back to the Basics

When planning your outdoor kitchen project in York, PA, start with the basic needs and build from there. Consider the elements you want in your dream outdoor kitchen. If your family makes pizza together every Friday night, you might want to add a wood-fire pizza oven. Do you prefer gas or charcoal grilling? These are all important factors to consider at the start of your project.

Put a Plan in Place

Once you’ve decided on your appliances, it’s time to move on to the layout. When planning the layout of your outdoor kitchen, keep in mind important safety measures and specific hookups needed to ensure your appliances work correctly.

Keep it Safe

Many homeowners in South Central Pennsylvania ask if they can cover their kitchen with a pavilion or roof structure. The short answer is yes, but there’s a lot that goes into it. When dealing with gas and fire, it’s crucial to follow all safety protocols to ensure your kitchen is safe. Specific clearances are needed between appliances for proper ventilation. If this seems overwhelming, don’t worry. Our team can help you follow all local rules and codes.

Hook It Up

No matter what appliances you choose, you’ll need electric, water, and possibly gas hookups. Before deciding on the location of your outdoor kitchen, make sure you know where your utility lines run. Building your kitchen closer to these hookups can save you money.

Lay It Out

When it comes to laying out your kitchen, you have two options: an outdoor kitchen attached to your home or detached from your home. When deciding which layout is best for you, consider the size of your yard and budget. Attached kitchens are a good option for those looking to save money but are limited in design choices and may require a building permit. Detached kitchens can be pricier but allow for more design options. Both layouts are great options; just be sure to check with your HOA or township to ensure you choose the best solution for your needs.

Build It Up

Ready to start planning your dream outdoor kitchen in York, PA?

How To Create a Backyard Oasis

You should take pride in your pool. We know there’s no better feeling than inviting your loved ones to relax in your backyard and enjoy the simple pleasure of a cold swim on a hot summer day. But it’s not just the pool that captures your guest, it’s the entire experience.

We often think about that first step into your outdoor oasis and the feelings it can bring to a homeowner or guest. What do you notice first? The crystal blue pool water, or the warm mood lighting surrounding it? Plants and walkways can set the tone too.

The options are endless and we’re here to help you pick out all the elements that come together to form your little slice of paradise.

CONTACT US

Pool & Water Features For Your Backyard

When it comes to choosing the right pool design and water features, the options always vary. From classic designs to modern innovations, there is something for every taste and style. One popular option is a fiberglass pool, known for its durability and low maintenance.

To enhance your pool’s ambiance, consider incorporating waterfalls and grottos into the design. These features add a touch of elegance and provide a soothing sound of cascading water.

With every layout, we adhere to rigorous industry standards to ensure your pool is safe, functional, and built to last. Consider factors such as shape and size that best suit your space and needs.

Have fun with it! Think about adding steps and sitting areas when designing your dream pool. These additions add convenience and opportunities for relaxation or socializing with friends in the water.

With such a wide range of options and features available, take the time to explore different designs and consult with professionals who can guide you through the decision-making process.

By carefully selecting the right pool design and incorporating water features, you can create a stunning outdoor oasis that will be enjoyed for years to come.

Lighten The Mood with Outdoor Lighting Ideas

It’s true, lighting is everything. Before deciding on the best pool lighting, decide on what you’d like to see. Are you looking for functional lighting for swimming at night, ambiance and mood lighting, or both?

Different lighting fixtures work better for specific pool shapes and sizes. For example, if you have a freeform pool with irregular edges, flexible LED strip lights may be a good choice to accentuate its unique contours.

Color is important too! Color temperature changes the aesthetic. Light fixtures with dimming capabilities are great too for adjusting the lighting intensity to create a different atmosphere.

The professionals with Inch & Co. Landscaping Division always consider durability and safety. Since pool lighting will be exposed to water and harsh outdoor conditions, we ensure fixtures are specifically designed for pool use, waterproof, and able to withstand temperature variations. We always prioritize safety by selecting lighting options that meet industry standards and regulations.

Consider long-term costs: Evaluate the long-term costs associated with different pool lighting options. LED lights, while initially more expensive, are energy-efficient and have a longer lifespan compared to traditional incandescent lights.

Plants & Rock Gardens

Plants, greenery, rocks, and stones are key to creating your desired atmosphere. When determining the best plants for your outdoor pool design, keep sunlight, size, and shade in mind.

Different plants have specific sunlight and temperature requirements, so choose plants that thrive in your local climate. Consider the amount of direct sunlight your pool area receives throughout the day, as some plants may not tolerate excessive sun exposure.

If you’re looking for a lush landscape, large leafy plants are certainly the way to go. Otherwise, be careful not to overcrowd the pool area. Some plants may spread vigorously and require regular pruning or maintenance.

Shooting for lots of shade, or want more privacy? Tall, bushy plants or climbers on trellises can provide privacy from neighboring properties or create shaded spots. Consider plants with dense foliage or those that can be trained to form screens or hedges. Keep in mind, we will always advise against choosing plants with invasive root systems that could damage pool structures or those that attract bees.

If you prefer a lush and vibrant look, opt for a variety of plants with different colors, textures, and blooming seasons. If you want a more minimalist or desert-inspired aesthetic, a rock garden with succulents and cacti could be a better choice! Incorporate rocks, boulders, or a rock waterfall feature, and then select plantings that complement the overall theme.

When in doubt, give the professionals at Inch & Co. Landscaping Division the opportunity to help you decide what’s best for you and your family.

CONTACT US

The post How To Create a Backyard Oasis appeared first on Inch & Co. While the state’s winters can be harsh, with icy winds and freezing temperatures, strategic landscaping practices can help ensure your outdoor spaces not only survive but thrive. Here are some essential winter landscaping tips tailored to the unique challenges of Pennsylvania.

1. Protect Your Plants

Pennsylvania winters can be tough on plants, especially with the potential for freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall. To shield your precious greenery, consider wrapping vulnerable plants with burlap or covering them with protective mulch. This extra layer provides insulation and safeguards plants from the harsh winter elements.

2. Prune with Precision

Late fall or early winter is an ideal time for pruning. Remove dead or damaged branches to encourage healthy growth come spring. Be cautious not to over-prune, as some plants thrive with a bit of extra foliage protection during winter. Additionally, pruning can help shape your landscape and prevent the accumulation of snow and ice on branches.

3. Winter Mulching

Mulching isn’t just for the warmer months. A layer of winter mulch around trees and shrubs can regulate soil temperature, preventing rapid freezing and thawing that can harm plant roots. Organic mulch, such as shredded leaves or straw, is an excellent choice as it enriches the soil as it decomposes.

4. Snow Management

When the snow starts to fall, consider how you’ll manage it to prevent damage to your landscape. Shovel snow away from delicate plants, and avoid piling it too high around trees and shrubs. This helps prevent breakage and ensures that your plants can breathe even under the snowy blanket.

5. Hardscape Maintenance

Inspect and repair any hardscape elements, such as pathways and retaining walls, before winter fully sets in. Freezing and thawing cycles can exacerbate existing issues, so taking care of repairs in the fall ensures your landscape features remain sturdy throughout the winter.

6. Winter Interest Plants

Introduce plants with winter interest to maintain a visually appealing landscape even in the coldest months. Evergreens, ornamental grasses, and plants with interesting bark or persistent seed heads can add texture and color to your winter garden.

Pennsylvania’s winters may be challenging, but with thoughtful planning and care, your landscape can remain resilient and beautiful throughout the season. By protecting your plants, strategically pruning, utilizing winter mulch, managing snow effectively, maintaining hardscape elements, and incorporating winter interest plants, you’ll not only survive winter but also create a picturesque outdoor space to enjoy even in the frostiest weather. Cheers to a winter wonderland in the Keystone State!

The post Winter Wonderland: Landscaping Tips for Pennsylvania Winters appeared first on Inch & Co.
